Socio-Economic Planning Sciences will publish a special issue on data envelopment analysis (DEA) in the public sector. The goal of this special issue is to compile state-of-the art research, spanning modelling, theory, empirical studies, application and case studies in this emerging and rich important research area. We seek contributions that are rigorously executed, clearly and succinctly written, and innovative relative to what is currently known. In light of the scope of SEPS, all papers must clearly demonstrate the relevance of their contributions with respect to the public sector.

The focus of the special issue is on the development of the DEA methodology and its applications to performance management in all segments of the public sector. Note that straightforward applications of DEA and pure methodology papers that do not show relevance to the public sector would be out of the scope of the journal.

While this special issue is devoted for best papers presented in the DEA2012 conference, it is also open to authors not presenting at this conference.

The Data Envelopment Analysis Journal, the official journal of the International Data Envelopment Analysis Society, publishes theoretical and applied research advancing the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as a methodology for improving organizational performance. The journal’s aim is to provide a channel for communication of new ideas and new insights about the design and use of DEA models.

The journal has a broad scope spanning all areas of analytical and empirical research related to the theory and practice of DEA. It draws on methods from management science, operations research, economics, statistics and other related disciplines. The journal publishes articles on new or improved models for DEA and computational techniques to analyze those models more efficiently. The journal also publishes applications of DEA models in novel ways, and is particularly interested in actual implementation of DEA in organizations. Articles on DEA applications draw on related themes from social and organizational sciences and various functional disciplines in business and management.

This special issue is devoted to the best papers presented at the DEA2012 conference in Natal, Brazil.

Fuzzy DEA book: Call for book chapter proposals

The field of performance measurement with fuzzy and imprecise data is continuing to grow. Linear programming in general and Data Envelopment Analysis in particular have always played a vital role in measuring efficiency and productivity of Decision Making Units. Today, the observed values of the input and output data in many real-world problems are imprecise or vague. Soft computing techniques including fuzzy sets have shown tremendous potential in dealing with imprecise, vague and uncertain data.

We have taken the initiative to edit the book on “Performance Measurement with Fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis“. This book aims at providing a collection of recent and state-of-the-art contributions on this emerging topic, and will be published in the international series of “Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing” (Springer-Verlag).

We wish to invite you to contribute to this edited book. We hope that you will be able to accept our invitation. At this stage, we invite you to submit [by June 30, 2012] a 1-2 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the goals and objectives of your proposed chapter.

Selection process and timeline

Since timeliness is crucial to the success of this editorial project, we would assume the following schedule:

Chapter proposals June 30, 2012
Decisions from editors July 31, 2012
Full submission of chapters September 30, 2012
Feedback of reviews November 30, 2012
Revised chapter submission January 31, 2013
Final acceptance notifications February 28, 2013
